How much will my council tax be?

Hi, could someone please advise as to how the council tax (Monthly cost) is calculated? I think it's something like this...
The yearly total is £997 and I will be living on my own. Is it £997 divided by 10, minus 25% single persons allowance = monthly figure. Or am I way off?

In my experience, that's how they were done 5 years ago when I was sending out the letters to people, but it may have changed - they were thinking of asking for 2 months worth of payments up front but I don't know how realistic that would've been.I can't add up.0

It was about 5 years ago since I rented my own property so that's probably where my thinking is coming from! Oh really? Wow, with the cost of moving out expensive enough, I could do without more upfront fees :laugh:0 -
Are you just moving in now? If so you will get a bill from the day you move in until 31/03/15, which will be due on 1st march or 31st March.
Then you will receive the years bill £997 minus the 25% to be paid in 10 months, approx £75.00 per month

I take it you are already living in the property? If so the new year charge is usually set in early March and then the annual bills will be sent out. The bill will show your charge and any discounts you are entitled to (in your case 25%). The balance after the discount is then spread over 12 months from 5th April to 5th Mar the following year. The first instalment is usually the odd instalment.
Based on £997 your instalments would probably be 1 @ £65.75 and 11 @ £62.
The 10 instalment option was more a LGA perk, this was scrapped in 2013 and most authorities should automatically give you 12 instalments on your bill.0 -
Nothing to stop you asking the council if you can pay in 12 instalments rather than 10make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
10 instalments is still the statutory instalment plan - the LGFA 2012 introduced an option for 12 instalments from 1 April 2013 however this is only on request in place of the statutory 10. Council Tax years run from 01 April to 31 March. The 10 instalment option was more a LGA perk, this was scrapped in 2013 and most authorities should automatically give you 12 instalments on your bill.
Annual charge less 25% gives you the amount payable. This amount is then divided by the number of instalments to give the amount due each month. The yearly total is £997 and I will be living on my own. Is it £997 divided by 10, minus 25% single persons allowance = monthly figure. Or am I way off?I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Hi,
Thank you for your replies! I don't move in until the start of March so I am sure that there will be a bill waiting for me as the estate agent sets everything up apparently
Thanks again

If you are renting, then your liability for Council Tax starts from the day your tenancy starts, which may be earlier than the day you actually move in. Also if you move out before your tenancy ends, then you remain liable for the CT until that date unless someone else subsequently occupies the property. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
