Steam cleaners

Does a steam cleaner actually clean stuff, i.e. get rid of grime, or does it just sanitise the surface?
I'm considering getting a steam cleaner for general cleaning, but in particular I want it to clean my light-coloured couch (fabric) and curtains. The couch in particular is starting to look a bit grubby. Will a steam cleaner make it look nice and creamy coloured again?

Short answer cherry is No, not really. it is wonderful on cleaning grease and grime off hard surfaces - but for upholstery, carpets etc its better to use shampoo. Although it does 'fluff' the fibres up, and can lift some dirt - it doesn't do as good a job as a detergent based system does.0

Thanks meritaten. That's kind of what I expected. I'll have to think of something else.0

Mine does a good job of cleaning the hard floors. I use mine in the bathroom too but they still need to be wiped with a cloth afterwards.
I still need a cloth to wipe down my cooker and microwave. I don't need the cloth on the 'foot' of the steam cleaner because it comes with a microfiber cloth you attach to the 'foot'.

Quick question for those of you who use steam cleaners regularly.
I was looking to get one for cleaning my hard floors - I have two dogs and raw feed them and although they're good at keeping on mats I worry about floor contamination.
However, one of my pet hates in housework is having to bleach and scrub ceilings and windows to remove black mould from moisture build up. I keep the house aired as much as possible from Spring through to Autumn, but it just makes it worse if you open windows in winter, so the last thing I want is to introduce extra moisture.
Do you find this a problem?0 -

No. Mind you I do have moisture traps on all the windowsills upstairs and when I use my hand steamer I tend to open the windows for a few minutes after ive used it.
Hardwood flooring its not a problem to steam them, what they don't tell you is that laminated flooring that's made from MDF will swell and bow under steam heat especially if water and moisture gets into the joins if done regularly, its OK to quickly and lightly go over them having someone with a towel mop up behind you once or twice a month for a deep cleanse, and then use a lightly dampened microfiber with you favorate cleaner for everyday use to keep it clean until it needs another deep steam clean.
I used the steamer on the walls too, I don't hang around with it though or it will turn the paint to rubberish gloop and come off the walls go quick enough where you steam the dirt them wipe with a cloth to retrieve the dirt.0 -
careful opening the windows too soon after you've steamed them, HOT then sudden cold=crack or smash if you not careful, I tend to leave for a 5 mins-10 mins before opening for the window to cool down. then come back with a microfiber cloth and wipe any moisture around the window sill and Upvc.
Ive never used it on the walls. I'm too scared too in case it brings the paint off. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
