Home made/Chemical free Deodorant and Toothpaste.

Options
I am wondering if anyone makes their own deo and toothpaste? Could it be done cheaply? I am looking to get away from using as many chemicals as i can when it comes to personal care, and thought these would be a start.

I have googled recipes, but they all seem to contain a long list of ingredients. Is it possible to use just a few ingredients, since the idea is to be frugal as well?

  • I don't make my own deo but I do use a crystal deo that you can buy in places like holland and Barrett. It's not too expensive and it lasts forever (unless you drop it ) there are no chemicals and is 100% natural.
:T Looking forward to the future :T

I've read about people using bicarbonate of soda and a little water, for both deodorant and toothpaste

    Everything contains chemicals.

You could perhaps make a (tooth) paste using bicarb and peppermint essential oil.

Erm everything is a 'chemical' even 'crystals', the salt you put on food, the minerals in your water etc

No. Of course it is chemical: everything is. These deo stick are made out of potassium alum, a chemical.

While it can be mined (probably expensive), they can also make it synthetically in a factory, and I think there is a good chance that that is what they do for these types of product as quality will be more controllable. So not really "natural" at all.

For what it's worth: I tried one of these as I thought it might be good for travelling (no liquid required), but I didn't like it. Personal choice though.

OP: you cannot avoid chemicals (or even cut down on them). Without chemicals the universe wouldn't exist.

I think you all know exactly what i mean, but I'll rephrase it.

I would like to try and avoid using unnecessary chemicals in products that come into contact with my body.
    Better?
  • I personally like 'Weleda' products. They're organic and not tested on animals.I use the rose deodarant. The only thing is,it's not cheap, but, for me,it's worth it.

I also have white vinegar in an old Weleda spray bottle for cleaning, and sometimes put that on by mistake.Once the vinegary smell has gone (a minute or two) vinegar actually works well as an deodarizer...google it.

    I've got a great book on the uses of vinegar 'Vim & Vinegar'.ISBN 978 0 06 095223 5

Let me know how you get on. :)

Thanks Good Advice, thats pretty much exactly the kind of thing i was looking for :)
  • I brush my teeth with a mixture of sea salt and bicarb which I dilute before using. I much prefer it to shop bought toothpaste and of course it costs less too. Many older people who have used it for years have very good teeth and apparently Julia Roberts swears by it. You can leave the salt out if you wish, but I prefer the taste.
