I think I read your original post as saying that you engaged a mortgage broker and that you had reviewed your Noddle credit reports? Did the broker review your Noddle reports and did they ask to see your Experian and Equifax reports?
If not, then it sounds like you need a different broker. Santander's residential lending criteria would consider a credit default as falling into their low scoring bracket and therefore, your application would be a candidate for refusal. The broker should have known this based on your credit history.
Take note that defaults recorded with any of the 3 credit reference agencies (Experian, Equifax, CallCredit/Noddle) are adverse issues, irrespective of amount, age and whether or not they are settled. Lender's appetite for these credit issues depends on their own lending criteria. Most high street lenders are likely to be off the table in your circumstances but you would be advised to see a whole of market mortgage broker experienced in sub-prime or adverse credit issues to see if they can place you with a lender that will take on a borrower with such a credit profile.
As a next step, start a local broker search with unbiased.co.uk and untick the Only show sponsored results box on the left hand side of the search results for a mortgage adviser. Under the filter selection What would you like advice on, you could also tick the box for Sub prime. It's also worth asking for recommendations from anyone you know, who may have used a good local broker.
Also obtain your statutory credit report from each agency, which costs £2 (see links below). You do not need their scores as it is immaterial. Put these reports in the hands of the broker, so that they have a complete picture of your credit history.
