    Relevancy perhaps ?

The ethnicity of the couple added nothing to the story

In fact if you refer to a couple not everyone will assume you mean a man and a woman - a couple could be a same sex couple - but the point of the story was that they caused disruption on the bus not their nationality or gender.

Exactly that. As a non-Asian I'm not directly affected or offended by this but it's more a point of reason. In this case I was just interested to know why someone's geographic background was relevant to the story.

Do you really think an Asian person would be 'affected' or 'offended' by that reference?

An Englishman, Scotsman, Jew, Asian and Irishman got on my coach. I thought, 'This has got to be a joke!'

To be honest I don't know, I was just wondering why singling out someone's descent / ethnic group is important. If there is no intended implication and it's simply to add some description to the story then fine, it just seemed a bit odd to me.
