I asked for a statement for my wife and it took about 5-6 weeks to come

She will be 66 in 2024 and has 21 years qualification, 3 working and 18 years kids, then housewifeing from threreon.
Pension estimate comes out at £89 new rules, £80 a week old rules. More than I thought it would be to be honest.
Me next, 40 years to date, collect 2021 but mainly contracted out.

We rang up less than 2 weeks ago and hubby has already got his, they said mine would take longer as I am on the new system,he's on the old.

Strange how some are very quick, others take forever. What I don't understand is they state an exact amount for the extra pension ,then say it could be less if you were contracted out for some of the time.I thought the whole point was to give you an exact figure so you knew where you were?

I applied for pension statements for both of us and they came today. (Took about 6 weeks). We both have gaps in our working lives, so I wanted to know if we needed to pay any voluntary contributions to get the full pension.

(I read the accompanying leaflet several times but could not find how many qualifying years are needed for full pension. From reading this thread it appears to be 35.)

According to the statements, I have 42 qual. years and my husband 46. I am 59 and he is 63 so they are saying that all the years from age 16 are qualifying. This is simply not true! My husband may just about have 35 years so he is probably ok, but I took 13 years out to raise a family.

Has any one else had statements that don't reflect their working lives? I am considering phoning them to ask what's going on, but thought I would post on here first in case I have misunderstood the statements.

So you are complaining about them telling you that you have more qualifying years than you expected?

If you "took 13 years out to raise a family" then you will have got HRP credits during that time if you were claiming child benefit.

Your husband will have three additional years added if he started work after the age of 16 as these credits are given on the assumption that if he wasnt working he was in full time education. In those days it was quite difficult not to pay contributions - once you started work they tended to chase people who didnt accrue full years.

As long as you will have gained 35 years by SPa it doesnt matter - giving you additional years over 35 doesnt pay you anything.

If you are that bothered ask HMRC (not DWP) for details of your contributions record here - https://www.gov.uk/check-national-insurance-record

Thanks Greenglide. I'm not complaining - I just don't want to reach pension age and find that they made a mistake and it's too late to correct it.

The figures don't stack up. My husband has paid no NI since 2004, and even allowing for 13 years Home Responsibility Protection mine only comes to 35 years. it sounds as if the link you've given is what I need. It's what I assumed I was going to get when I applied for a pension forecast!

My statement arrived this morning and shows that I have 36 qualifying years but my estimated 'new' pension has been reduced due to being contracted out for a number of years.
I'm not fussed about that as I am about to start using that fund now to draw on giving me an income to see me through to the state pension.

What happens if you were born before April 1951 and so are entitled to a pension under the old scheme, but then defer your retirement for three years to May 2018. How do they calculate your pension?

That has been asked on numerous occasions in this forum.

If your SPa date is before 6/4/2016 )all men born before 6/4/1951 fall into this category) you will get a pension under the old (current) rules. Deferment does not change this.

Since the benefit for deferment falls dramatically with the nSP and it is no longer inheritable lots of people are happy to fall into this category.
