  • Thanks all.

I really need to move away from glass. They are way too heavy. I also have a scar on the back of my ear from surgery and the weight of the glasses make it really sore and irritated.

I also want to get away from rectangle frames with wide arms.

Which companies to specsavers use when it comes to making lenses?

I've been told that the cost of the 1.9 glass lens would be in the region of £400. Totally outrageous in my opinion.

Years ago the client had a range of lens manufactures to choose from.

Is your eyesight as bad as mine?

No I have prisms and take seizures so I'm completely unsuitable to wear glass lenses.

Our 1.9 glass is nowhere near £400, last time I dispensed glass it was a varifocal and that lady paid about £360. I'm sure we do glass for less than the cost of the D voucher so £180 max.
  • I had been recommended another local independent optician. I went there today and I cannot praise them highly enough. Totally different experience to the previous opticians I had visited recently.

I am now looking into the possibility of lens replacement procedure as I feel it's the best chance I have to stop my eyesight getting progressively worse.

If you're getting IOLs make sure you meet the surgeon before you go ahead with anything - don't be fobbed off with a "laser consultant" or "advisor" of any description. Meet the surgeon and make sure you feel confident in their abilities.

If you can afford it id recommend getting multi focal lenses as the minute your own lens comes out you'll lose your ability to accommodate to read small print - no point getting IOL surgery and needing glasses afterwards anyway.
  • My preferred option is the new Trifocal lens.

I am doing intensive research, not going to let just any clinic even just look at my eyes. I intend to get the best treatment out there regardless of cost.

I can't even access any funds until July, so got plenty of time to research the options.

My understanding is that Specsavers have the branding rights to 'Pentax', meaning they can source whatever lenses from wherever they want and brand them as 'Pentax' lenses. So to answer the question, it could be anywhere from their own labs, Zeiss etc to some far eastern production unit.

Given your prescription, I'd be cautious with multifocal lenses - if you're not happy with the visual result, it's not so easy to have them replaced.

  • It's Trifocal that seems to be what I'm after. I know monofocal is no go from what I had read.

Looking on Sunderland's website, they appear to offer a small option of lens possibilities when compared to London eye hospital or centre for sight also in London. I am hoping Sunderland's website is a bit out dated and they do offer a wider variety of options.
