Can anyone help me. My son is 21 and thinking of taking on a plumbing apprenticeship. He went to college for a maths and English test today and passed. But as he took his GCSEs in 2009 he has been told that he will have to retake his GCSEs as they are only valid for 5 years. He finished college in 2013and achieved a national diploma level 3 equivalent to 3 a levels. Does anybody know if he will definitely have to retake the GCSEs.

My gcses were considered out of date when I started my apprenticeship so as part of it I had to do a key skills exam, took a couple of days. I think they were in communications, IT and maths, despite also taking advanced mathematics for engineers!0

They are not GCSEs that he has to re-take, the framework of apprenticeships means that he has to achieve Functional Skills.
It is not decided by the college or training provider, it is set in the Framework document. Functional Skills are not as labourious as GCSEs - they are more about maths and English in the workplace rather than writing a book review, for example.
Good luck

Why on earth is the whole sub-16 education system focused on getting young people to take GCSEs, but then saying that they are of no use to you after 5 years?
What, then is the point of GCSEs?
