Advice on getting a mortgage without UK address for 3 years

My partner and I are wanting to get a mortgage. We both earn around £40K a year with £20K in savings. The only catch that we have been told by Nationwide is, as my partner is from New Zealand and he doesn't have three years worth of UK address. By January 2016, he would of only had 1.5 years.
Does anyone know a way around this or a bank that would give us a mortgage?

This will depend on his visa status, time in UK and loan to value.
It would be worth talking to an independent mortgage broker to work out what you will be able to do an when.I am a mortgage broker.
