OP, you mention not wanting to go and see your GP twice so close together; in fact my experience of GPs has been (and I will explain the logic) that they have a set amount of time per appointment, and if you want to fit two things in you either need a double appointment or to come back at a later time.
I've experienced this when I'd needed a repeat prescription review and gone to see my GP at the same time as trying to get treated/helped/diagnosed/whatever for an unconnected chest problem. I was told that to fit both in I'd need to book a double appointment next time- so please don't feel concerned about seeing your GP twice in two appointments even if it ends up two days together- there is nothing wrong with this.

I'm glad you've been able to have the foresight to recognise you are taking a more negative angle on this without the facts yet. It is then in your power to remind yourself that things have not happened yet- the negative outlook does not mean things will go wrong they are your fears, but not facts. If you can keep reminding yourself and correcting yourself when things get too intense- even if you have to write things down on Post-it notes and splash them around your home! (I've done this before, it has helped).

And if you can talk to as many people as will listen, and when they stop, there are many phone lines such as Mind, Reach and The Samaritans who are all experts at listening. It may sound difficult but the more you talk the easier it tends to be and if it all feels too much you can always hang up. If it helps as well, writing things down in a diary/note book can help just to get things out. I find it helpful and others I know who do this also find it helpful and there is no one to feel judged about either. It could also be useful to reread and remind yourself about when you start your CBT as well.
  • I really want to book in with my GP this week to tell him how things are at the moment, but scared of saying too much in case they put me in a hospital or something. Would never kill myself as not brave enough. But I do wish I'd never been born then I wouldn't be having to deal with any of this

Need the support of my GP at the moment

Phone and book your GP, don't suffer like this. They don't cart people off in straight jackets nowadays.

When I last went to my GP in tears asking to be put back on anti depressants, I told her i felt I was such a failure to need them again. She said " I wish I could show you my files and you would see the hundreds of patients who take them".

    It's very common nowadays.

Are you on anti depressants? If not, then it would be worth trying. If you are then you might need them adjusted.i only say this because the fact that this issue is getting you so upset seems to say a little help is needed.

Don't be scared or feel that you are a burden, you are not. Talk here as much as you can xx

Have you tried the Samaritans? I can really recommend them- you can hang up any time and they could really help out here. I'd really recommend calling them OP. Even if it doesn't work, what harm will it do to try?

  • Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd post this here and see what others think

My dad went to the doctors this morning for his blood pressure check and he seen the doctor I have been seeing for my depression and social anxiety

He told the doctor he is very worried about me the fact my depression has been worse than usual, not sleeping and lashing out at objects, crying, screaming and just generally extremely low

He told the doctor that we are having to move house for personal reasons and that I have been getting myself extremely worked up as I don't want to change GP surgeries

The doctor did say it's very flattering as most GP surgeries are every bit as good, but he did say that he has younger patients he sees there who are at University and don't wish to change, so are still registered, although in an emergency obviously see someone local. So assume he is hinting that an hour away wouldn't be an issue

He has said to my dad that he knows I have an appointment in a couple of weeks, but would like me to go in asap for a chat, he said he will fit me in as soon as possible even if it is the end of his surgery

What do you guys think ? The pessimistic side of me is thinking when he said it's very flattering as most GP surgeries are every bit as good he might mean I have to register elsewhere. But the other side is thinking the fact he mentioned he has patients at university who are registered may be a good thing

I am gonna phone up in the morning

You mean your going to decide what the GP is going to say before hearing what they are going to say and then act on what your mind tells you?-When you've already acknowledged that your mind is pessimistic??

I'm a little confused Claire- surely if you know your prone to negative thinking and that you recognise that your doing that now, the right thing to do would be to not listen to what your mind is telling you-

I think you already know the answer and are just asking for support/wanting to check in ;) (It's OK to ask for support, you don't need us to make up your mind for you- you've already shown your able to do this- just because you are able to do something, doesn't mean you have to do it alone if you don't want to.)

If you know what to do but just want support or to check in, please just ask- don't undermine yourself and your own thoughts and intelligence. You deserve to give yourself credit for knowing yourself and how your mind works- you already know all the answers here- you've answered your own question ;)

    Hope the appointment goes well.;)

I think I'm just scared to be honest if the pessimistic side of me is right

It shows my doctor wants to help the fact he has asked me to go back in before next scheduled appt due to all my worries, but I think I'm just thinking how is it gonna change anything. Depression is horrible. Combined with social anxiety, its extra horrible.

Claire- depression is caused by a chemical imbalance. Get the balance right and your 'pessimistic side' may not seem so bad. Please go and see your GP and take some advice from him. He is there to help you. x

But the pessimistic side will always win if you let it, purely by it's own nature. Every time you battle with it and choose to ignore it, you get a little bit stronger and a little bit more in control. It's not a way to resolve your problems or deal with them by bypassing things like that, but it does give you the option to take your feelings to someone to work on.

Yes it's horrible and difficult and can feel like mental torture, but the thought is worse than the actual event IYSWIM. You've got nothing to lose if you've already played out the bad news in your head and are acting as though it's real-which you do seem to be at the moment.

Or you could take the other option and sit in fear watching the world go past....(from personal experience, I don't recommend this!)
