Hi,


I see Alexander Mann solutions have officially launched their new services from Belfast this week. What exactly does this company do? I thought it was purely a recruitment firm but their site talks about outsourcing and management support etc.

  • Belfast is seen as a low cost centre for professional services in the UK, hence the likes of Citi, Allen and Overy, PwC. etc have a lot of their back office, support and operations sites here....... well educated graduates but low pay compared to a lot of other parts of the UK.... My OH worked for one of them for a few years and the staff in Belfast in a lot of the business were paid about half that of those doing a similar role in London......

    Not saying it's a bad thing, a jobs a job at the end of the day and they do tend to pay higher than average for Northern Ireland...

    I think they do offer "executive" recruitment and head hunting but also put staff into companies to run their functions in house like recruitment, HR, etc...... AFAIK anyway....

    On the salary side of things these companies tend to use an external benchmark such as Hays, this will give them a guideline salary for a role in question and also the region. Pitching in and around that mark should secure them a person with the right skills/experience from the local market. The problem is where they can't get someone local and then have to up the stakes to attract in someone from the mainland putting them out of sync with the rest of the workforce.

    you will never get all your roles filled from "locals"....usually they will tend to give these people in this scenario a different job title so the salary difference isn't an issue... ie. they are a "different" role/job.....

    OH found, as have some wider friend circle, that at the end of the day, you're just another number in these big organisations....

    They do seem like a good company and a great addition for Belfast.

    I'm not exactly sure what they do, do they work with companies who approach them and find whatever personnel said company is looking for.

    AFAIK they offer a wide range of services from "executive" recruitment and head hunting for companies... (we're not talking forklift drivers or factory operatives) as well as putting their own "staff" into companies to run their back office functions in house like recruitment, HR, etc...... and I think they also offer outsourced functions like admin etc.

    Essentially A high end recruitment company who also offer back office services

    That is a potential downside however there is real promotion prospects in the large organisations and opportunities to broaden your skills.

    I've tended to work for large companies - current one that i'm just starting 5000 employees, previous one 70,000 employees, prior to that 2000, 1500, 15000, 2000 and i've done very well out of them.

    Agree there are pro's and cons..... at the end of the day it's a job and it's what pays the bills and keeps a roof over your head...
