Vanilla Pod v Vanilla Extract

Options
If a recipe calls for a vanilla pod, can I use some vanilla extract? If so, how much would I put in? I'm not sure my local shop sells pods.

Just guessing, but I'd go with a teaspoon of extract.

All the supermarkets sell vanilla pods but they are pricy. You can also buy them in bulk on ebay.

I have a vanilla pod which I have in with my caster sugar to give it a nice flavour ,but use vanilla extract in baking usually I have found 1 teaspoon of extract = 2 teaspoons of essance Ectract is about just under £6.00 a bottle but is more concentrated and essance is the tiny bottles you can but for about a pound near to the colouring icing stuff in the supermarket but its not as strong as the extract

Thanks everyone. It's to go in a strawberry cheesecake I'm making with my daughters on say. Don't bake much, but trying to do more.
