scratch on plastic

Hi

I know this may not be the best place to ask but does anyone know what can I use to remove a scratch from a plastic brake light?

It isn't a deep one so I don't want to start sanding it down

Thanks

Something like Brasso-a mild abrasive? Sanding any kind will scratch it.

Sanding with a coarse grade of paper will scratch it but you can get super fine grades. try a 12,000 grit. You can polish glass with a 12,000 grit.

Try one of the headlight cleaning kits.

Have a look for a product called micromesh, its made for the job! Folks on Fleabay sell kits of assorted grades for not a lot!

If you can't feel it with your nail any old body polish you have should do.
I polish and wax my rear lights, surprising how well they shine.

Just bought some of that from your recommendation. Plan to do my rears with the 12,000 grit and then polish them up with a machine polisher and some cutting compound.

    You'll have a long search for 12,000 grit! I think it's more likely to be 1200 :)

If the scratches are minor, toothpaste works well. Seriously.

  • I bought a selection of micromesh and it definitely said 12,000 was one of the selections.

I've heard of the toothpaste trick. It's something to do with the abrasive compound. I've got some Meguiars Plastic stuff I'll use with my dual action polisher after rubbing it down with the micro mesh.
  • I have some 12,000 and 24,000 grit emery cloth kicking around which I got from an army chum. It's the stuff used for polishing minor abrasions out of Tornado and Eurofighter cockpit canopies.

    Blimey that must be smooth!
    I use 1000, 2000 then 3000 for paintwork.
