According to Milton, first time mums spend a whopping £3,000 in preparation for their baby arriving. Second time mums come in a lot cheaper with 55% spending £55. Is it first time panic or just excitement?

How much did you spend on your bundle of joy before they arrived? Let us know in the poll!

I spent about £500 on actual baby things (including pram!) but I had work done on the house in preparation so that's why it cost more than £2000!

Probably around £300, £200 of that being cloth nappies, the rest was basic clothes.

I did not know anyone with young children so read every book and bought anything which had the word baby on it. !!

I don't think that I would like to find out exactly how much it was lots.

As it cost us close to £25,000 just to get me pregnant and I had to change my car (Smart cars aren't baby-friendly) our total expenditure was somewhere around £40,000

What a lot of money! I was still at Uni when pregnant so (then) mother in law bought the pushchair. I was given bin liners of second hand clothes and a second hand cot.

We bought an Ikea cupboard that had the changing mat on. That was it!

I didn't get big enough to need maternity clothes, didn't need bottles etc. Did use disposable nappies most of the time.

I know a couple who spent close to £200,000 to have their 2 daughter's - 21 treatment cycles of IUI and IVF. I don't know how they found the emotional strength to go through it so many times, especially as they lost twin boys who were born too premature to survive.

    IVF is very expensive!

Practically nothing. We'd just bought a new house and then I'd been made redundant so we were utterly skint. My female relatives and friends turned out their attics for equipment and hand-me-down clothes and I bought a couple of packs of nappies, when my son was born people gave small token gifts and vouchers for me to buy other necessities. I painted the nursery pale yellow and also painted and stencilled a couple of old pieces of furniture from my aunt's house. The curtains were made from charity shop duvet covers in a lovely children's print and I cut down a couple of our own sheets and dyed them for cot bedding. It was all great fun and by the end the nursery looked like I'd spent a fortune on it given that most stuff was hand made in some way.

My son didn't want for anything, he was loved and warm and fed and it didn't do him a jot of harm to sleep in mostly pink babygros. (My friends had mostly girl babies, lol.) So top spend? I lashed out on a couple of tins of paint as well as the nappies so probably about £50-£100.

I'm not sure the exact cost but probably around £500 to cover the buggy, cot, mattress and car seat. We did upgrade the car when our son was a few months old but I'm not sure that counts as "nesting".

I don't know the exact figure, but it was more than I'd feel comfortable admitting since my DH and I have always been pretty budget-conscious when it comes to treating ourselves; as soon as I got pregnant all of that went out of the window and we bought everything we wanted for our little boy! Luckily we have generous parents on both sides so my parents bought the nursery furniture and the in-laws bought the pram.

My DH went crazy as soon as I got pregnant, he painted every room in our flat (something I'd been asking to do for about 2 years!), fixed everything that needed fixing, updated everything that needed updating etc. He was a menace for ordering baby things from Amazon and we got nearly daily deliveries for about 3 months straight!

There are a lot of things that we bought that I wouldn't recommend/buy again, but we live and learn. The next baby will be just as spoilt, I'm sure, just in a more sensible fashion! :)
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!
