collecting train tickets at the station

But on what basis is the company you purchase your tickets from authorised to release credit card details to other companies?
I say 'probably' because I haven't checked the T&Cs of any train company for this point. I'll leave that to you.0 -
I trust yorkie2's answer0

If collecting from a machine, any card is accepted. Not even necessarily one that the ticket collector owns!
(And those that (wrongly) say you must use the one used to buy the tickets with, what card do you think is needed when you didn't use a card to buy the tickets in the first place?)0 -
I find it depends on the machine at the station. The way I do it at work is to buy tickets using my company credit card via Paypal (using Trainline to book the tickets) as this allows any card to be used on collection.~~~~~~~~~~
If you’re generally healthy and aged between 17 and 65, do something amazing....

Generally any card can be used but it depends on your account.
Some accounts have restrictions which means only the card it was booked with can claim the tickets.
This would be the reason for the inconsistency of information.
There is no way of knowing if you have restrictions or not but on the system it shows as a black suticase for any card pick up. The Train Companies don't want you to know this because it's part of their fraud protection to suggest only the card that it was booked with can pick it up.
There is no way to change the restriction. You can telephone to check/ask about any card pick up - they may tell you they've "enabled the reference for any card pick up" but that means your account has the black suitcase, and therefore is unrestricted anyway.
As Yorkie has touched on, all train companies use the same system to book tickets. The websites are just the front end. TheTrainLine have a booking fee, which they charge to be able to run their website. Train Companies don't have booking fees, as the finance to run their site comes from elsewhere.
However, all companies use the same system so when giving credit cards to East Coast, Virgin would be able to see them too.
Source: I dealt with this system only a few months ago.0 -

Some Companies e.g. LM had a policy of allowing any card collection, while Thetrainline had a policy of only allowing business account holders to use any card. Most Companies required the same card to be used (as stated above, only the last 4 digits were stored, so in practice any card with the same last 4 digits would have worked)anotheruser wrote: »The Train Companies don't want you to know this because it's part of their fraud protection to suggest only the card that it was booked with can pick it up.anotheruser wrote: »However, all companies use the same system so when giving credit cards to East Coast, Virgin would be able to see them too..0
