Not been paid since before Christmas

My OH was working for a company than instals bathrooms. He was self employed and had to put invoices into them after each job.
They have never been good at paying, taking between 3 and 5 weeks to pay and bearing in mind lots of the jobs are far from home he has to pay fuel, hotel etc and then wait to get the money back.
Two jobs he did in the first two weeks of December he not only had hotels and fuel, he also had to buy quite a lot of materials including a basin and a toilet as the company cocked up and they would not be arriving at the job on time. The customer threatened to cancel the job and OH, trying to help out said he would buy the items. His outgoings for those 2 jobs alone is in the region of £2,000. We couldn't really afford to pay this money out and have been really struggling for money ever since.
He not only has not been paid for the jobs done at the beginning of December but also for jobs done in January. In total he is owed over £5,000. He stopped working for them mid January because he was sick of their attitude.
Anyway despite numerous texts and emails he has not received a penny and they will only say he will be paid but "at their convenience"!
What would you do in the circumstances? Should we try and get a solicitor to send a letter or just send a letter before action and, if no response (and I doubt there would be) go to Small Claims Court?
Even if we won in the Small Claims would the company be forced to pay up? I know they will try and get out of paying if they can.
Also is there any way we can claim any interest on the money laid out on say materials?
