Mortgage interest changes

I received a letter from my mortgage company last week regarding an error they had made on the interest rates on my mortgage. some time ago (can't remember when) my mortgage company was taken over by another one and so, therefore was my mortgage. The letter states that under my agreement with the old company any changes in interest rates on my mortgage would become effective from the 1st of the following month. They then told me that since it was taken over they applied any changes immediately. The letter then states that from now on all interest changes will take place from the 1st of the following month as per my agreement.

They did not mention anything about any form of compensation for the mistake but am I right in believing that they may have overcharged me by applying interest at the wrong time?

Thanks for any help.
