Debt Collectors letter

Hi all,
i hope this is the right place for this post - I can't see anywhere better...
We've received a letter from Experto Credite (Debt Collectors) demanding payment of a £900 debt for Npower. We transferred our electricity account (also with Npower) from the day we completed and Npower don't beleive we owe them anything.
Having spoken to them it seems to refer to the few weeks after we bought our house, the debt was originally with the previous owners (a university) and they seem to have just told Experto that they should be pursuing us instead.
The letter we've had threatens legal action in the next few days or a 'licensed field operative' calling.
Having looked around for template letters I can find lots dealing with debt disputes under the CCA. My question is, is a utility company debt covered by the CCA? If not, can anyone point me to a good form of words or letter for dealing with these people?

No they are not covered by a CCA.
Do you have anything in writing from NPower confirming the situation? You need to get something in writing from them.
Have you contacted them and asked them to call the DCA off?
They have instructed the DCA to collect this money, they should call them off!
You need to somehow prove that the debt is not related to you, a letter from Npower would be ideal.
You will then need to challenge them to prove the debt is yours as you clearly weren't resident at the address during the time the power was consumed and that they are acting illegally pursuing a debt that is clearly not yours.
I don't have a standard letter - perhaps another poster will help out.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
