It probably depends on why you were let go, how long you were there, the industry you work in, and what you do between being sacked and the interview.

eg. gross misconduct (theft), 30 year career (can't just skip it on the resume), financial sector, and sat on your bum rather than retraining - not much chance.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

    Then don't get sacked.

Far from impossible to get another job. I know loads of people who have including myself.

Depends on what job.......how long is a piece of string.

    I'll give an example.

A retail store manager I know was a former postman who for whatever reason kept huge amounts of mail in his house. He went to prison for 3 months. Soon after he gained employment as a store supervisor/ then manager in quick time.

Whether he omitted/ lied about previous happenings or the company never made any checks I don't know.

It all depends on why you were sacked. If you were a good employee in your last job, your attendance and how long you worked for the company.

Some companies may be prepared to turn a blind eye, but even then it would depend on the job at hand and your history.

I'm pretty sure he omitted that very relevant info and wasn't referenced thoroughly. He's in a huge position of trust with keys to the premises containing hundreds of thousand pounds of stock and access to the safe. No retailer would take that risk.

In many cases, it's not something you can control. Many people can be forced out simply because they don't "fit" - and therein lies the problem of an unfair reference which could be untrue and hence challenged, though sadly by this time many potential employers have walked away.

I suppose the key point is that even if references are asked for as a matter of course don't assume that they are by any means followed up. Or not.

If I was that way inclined I could get him the sack within hours. Some of the curtain twitchers on here would love that opportunity.

Wouldn't be so sure - I know a couple who've been there & done that inclusive of one in a significantly more "high security" setting than your average retail management position.

Having been on the wrong end of a dismissal myself I wouldn't say it's the kiss of death, but it is about how you learn from it. I can honestly say hand on heart that I will never make the same mistake again & can explain the reasons behind me losing my job. However in the 2 jobs I've had since then it's never been an issue, including my current one who knew the full story prior to offering me a job.

I know someone in a very similar situation.
Sacked for gross missconduct after stealing thousands of pounds worth of clothes and was able to get a similar job within a matter of months. I know that they didn't include the job they were fired from on their CV, but I don't know how they filled in the 'gap' (?)
Probably said they were 'travling the country' or something! lol

If you were a football manager of a premiership club it would seem very easily! :D
