Always suited and booted for an interview. Show them that you have made an effort and respect the process.

So, what did you wear &, more importantly, how did it all go?!
  • Personally, I would advise wearing what you feel comfortable in, but the addition of a jacket would enable them to see you in a slightly more formal light. In the new role you may be expected to attend meetings both with internal & external people, so a slight change in how you are perceived would be good. Good Luck!

Thanks for your replies. The women in the role I am going for do not wear suits, but they wear smart trousers and a smart top.

No there are no external candidates. They did initially recruit externally for the post and appointed someone but it didn't work out and then they realised they needed someone who knew the business to be able to do the role effectively.

I am feeling quite nervous, it doesn't help that the interview is at another office and this is a 4 hr drive for me and the weather is a bit bit hit and miss at the moment. After that drive I need to take part in a group exercise, complete a presentation, then one to one interview. I am going to try and arrive 1 hr early so I can sit, chill and have a cuppa!

You are on the right lines to arrive early. If you know what the presentation is, then practice it before you go so that it flows better. Don't speak too quickly and make eye contact with each of the interview panel. At the end of the one to one interview tell them how interested you are in the role and ask if they have any doubts about your ability to perform the role, as you would like the opportunity to respond before you leave the room. If they don't have any doubts, then you are reminding them you are ideal for the job. Otherwise you get the chance to address the issues. All the best
  • Assuming you are female, cant always assume these things these days, then why would you wear trousers if you prefer skirts/ dresses? Unless the job involves lots of going up ladders and you'll be doing such at the interview then wear a suit but it can be a dress with a jacket or a skirt suit.

If you're a guy then you probably should conform for the interview and wear trousers.
  • I haven't worn a suit to an interview for years (I work as a PA)

Jacket over a dress or cardigan and dress.
  • If you work is very professional and you are going to meet high level managers then you should wear suit , or else normal formals can work too.
