I cook my rice in an electric steamer and it always comes out really nice. You put the rice in a container which fits inside the steamer and away you go.
Consider buying the cheapest steamer you can findI'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!
I'm not losing my hair... I'm getting more head!!0 -
Lakeland do a nice little rice cooker you put in the microwave, but all you really need is a saucepan with a tight fitting lid.
Penryhn's perfect rice recipe.
I always use Basmati rice.
Measure the desired quantity of rice ( half a cup per person )
Rinse the rice well.
Put rice in pan and cover with water so its about a thumbnail depth over the rice.
Bring to the boil.
Reduce heat to a minimum and put lid on pan.(If the lid is loose use foil to improve the seal)
Leave for 15 minutes.
Take the lid off and fluff up the rice. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Same here, my steamer was only about £15 (2-3 years ago) and came with a rice bowl and had full instructions on timings for different types of rice0 -

matalan do a cheap rice cooker that you use in the microwave - I think they charge about a fiver. We have two and they are easy to use.
Although if you live near Kidderminster then there is a stall near Boots that does the same thing for a Quid a time!3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!

If you've got a chinatown near you it's worth trying there. They'll come in all sizes and will last a long time!My family are chinese and I can only remember them changing rice cookers twice in my lifetime. They tried a well known chef's version of a rice cooker a few months ago and it was rubbish so they went back to the old one which has been working for years.
If not, I know a fool proof way of cooking rice in a saucepan!0 -
I think I would buy the lad a saucepan and a small timer! He not only needs to learn how to cook but also how to pay attention to the amount of time stuff takes - and a timer is useful for other stuff as well. A reminder of what time you need to scarper when going out (so never late for lectures, exams etc.), timing yourself on phonecalls, playing chess/scrabble etc.0
