One of my all time favourite albums is by Basia, called 'The Sweetest Illusion'. You put it on and leave it there; every song is a delight. It can be background for a dinner party or just for pleasure when you're sitting quietly, reading or sewing. Find her on Youtube or Napster etc. Such a talent and songs that make you smile and/or cry. So beautiful.

Basia is fantastic. I'm old enough to remember when she was part of Matt Bianco. :)

    Also recommend Zero 7.

Also recommend Last FM (www.last.fm) for music selections - click on "Listen" and just plug in a genre or name of an artist and it goes off and finds new stuff for you.

Finally, Youtube has loads of back-catalogue music (some of the record companies seem to be using it to promote sales).

Try Madeleine Peyroux. I'm also quite fond of dipping into my old Manhattan Transfer albums when I'm in that sort of mood.

not exactly Jazz , but for female vocalists how about Julie Cruise ?
I love this album which features her contributions to the Twin Peaks soundtrack ( which is also well worth a listen ! ) and some other great stuff

You should check out Madeleine Peyroux or Melody Gardot. Sounds like they're be right up your street.

It may be a bit dancey for you (listen past the first track which isn't representative of the rest of the album) but NuYorican Soul. It features some amazing jazz/soul/old R&B singing with Roy Ayres, Tito Puente and George Benson. If you're not sure just look up "I am the black gold of the sun" from NuYorican Soul and give it two minutes. If you're not hooked I'm a spam sandwich!
