I had a friend ask about a link he found asking "Is this real?" about an apparent competition...

I am actually surprised that I even need to post this but I am going to anyway. And lets start by Quoting Martin Lewis himself "Ask yourself, Is this too good to be true - because if it is you are more or less sure its a scam"

PLANET49 (Soon to be known as eGENTIC) are the latest that I have had pointed to me...

The contest in question asks you "Who makes the Iphone?" with three options to choose from then you are directed to the page to select your 'PRIZE' and give your details...

I have heard talk of Spyware and Software being offered... I never got that far - I just read the TERMS AND CONDITIONS...

AND IT IS HERE YOU WILL FIND IF A COMPANY IS GENUINE OR A SCAM! ALWAYS READ THEM!!!

When you do read the Terms of this one, you are told that "Apple is not a participant in or sponsor of this promotion." if you read the small print...

And a little research goes a long way...

They are a "Lead Generation company" so are paid to get contacts who may be interested in buying a companies products...

So is the contest a Scam? Yes and No is the answer.

For starters, When you look at the list of "Sponsors" who obviously must be providing prizes - THEIR OWN COMPANY IS MENTIONED THREE TIMES!!! YES! THREE TIMES!

Second, The small print makes it clear that "Premium Rate Entry" may come form some of their sponsors...

And finally, the one thing that does suggest this company is not 100% legit... UK and EU law now requires that all competitions have an "Opt Out Policy" when it comes to information from sponsors.

By making clear that they are a "Lead Generation Company" - which I found very easily with a visit to their website, They are "Technically" not in breach of the Law... As they are NOT competition providers.

But the law does not look kindly on these Technicalities...

You do obviously have the choice of closing the page... But the idea is to get people to react on impulse and it works!

It is why the law was changed... By rights, there should be a BOX either opting in or out of "Third Party Marketing" or "Data Sharing with Our Sponsors"

While I have focused on one company for this one, It goes without saying really -

READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS,

CHECK THE SMALL PRINT

AND IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE... YOU CAN BET YOUR LIFE IT IS!
