So, my retirement plan is involving long term property purchases, and using their subsequent rental income once their mortgages have been competed.

Typically you need around 6-7 properties for that to be effective. Especially when you have to factor in the mortgage repayment and capital gains tax. You also need to build up capital reserves sufficient to cover negative income periods, destruction of property and refurbishment.

This would give a potential base income of £1,640 - £1,790 before any tax per month.

so largely comparable to the pension income on £5000 a year with a relatively low growth rate assumed. However, I am not sure you have factored in CGT and repayment of the mortgage.

Property is an option but it has its own risks and issues.
