    The guys here aren't able to recommend any specifics.

    I would just try looking for another fee free broker if you want another opinion. Maybe one local to you or see if family/friends have any recommendations.

    The decision really is whether I take the risk and hope I get accepted.

    If I don't ... how long is reasonable to wait until I make a further application?

    At the point of the second application, the default will have expired anyway, so would be a non issue.
