anybody had ankle ligament surgery

Hi I have had ankle ligament surgery on the 8 of Jan. I am currently in plaster. For six weeks!! I am normally a quite active person I love my dog walking, I go to circuits, bike, and boot camp.

I would love to hear from people who have been through this procedure. I want to how long it took to get back to normal. If they are able to do everything they did before or how much it as restricted them.

I have had three lots of open Achilles tendon lengthening, a brostrom repair with peroneal brevis graft as well as four other ankle surgeries.

Ligament surgery takes longer than bone surgery to heal and good physio is critical afterwards when in partial and full weight bearing mode to get the best results.

Things will never be the same and you are likely to have some weakness and certainly wearing good supportive footwear with good ankle support helps.

Expect pain and swelling for up to a year afterwards. Certain types of high impact sports should be avoided afterwards with certain ligament surgeries.

I now have an ankle fusion so am not the person to talk to about restrictions.
  • Thanks it sounds like you really have been through the mill!

I was interested to see what the expected results will be. It is only three wk after my op and this last day or to it has started to b quite achy. Maybe I am doing to much?

I have been told to expect 6-10 months before its right/ to see how successful surgery as been. This I find v alarming.

You're not keeping your toes above your nose for long enough. The enemy of good healing is swelling and to to keep swelling down you need rest, ice and elevation.

My experience is twelve months for fullest healing and even then there will still be limitations.
