I have had their glasses for two years and am very pleased with them.

I used to go to Specsavers, but , from Asda, had four pairs, all with the thinnest lenses, for a couple of £s more than the cost of two pairs from Specsavers. The latter only had the lowest grade of thin lenses and these only one lens per pair (done by buying a pair of thinner lenses and having one fitted for the eye with the highest prescription).

Thanks - a good reminder. We've been using Specsavers for years, but the prices have been creeping up and up, and they're no longer the cheap opticians they used to be. They're also experts at the Ryanair approach - an apparently low price, which ends up costing an arm and a leg after the various extras have been added.

My wife needs extra light lenses, which cost a lot at Specsavers - I'm guessing they'd be a lot less at Asda?

its a shame you cant see the new frames online. wish they had more fashionable range for nhs voucher only. before the change to new frames they only had two sqaure styles and the rest round horrible ones.

Quite a lot of negativity here about the quality of the varifocals:

I wonder just how good Asda is, as against Specsavers, for varifocals. Not really something you want to compromise on.
  • Our experience over several years has proved that you get what you pay for. Their 'branded' frames have proved of poorer quality than a lower cost pair from an independent optician.

They tend to buy frames that have been discontinued elsewhere.

ASDA were unable to advise me which make of lenses they proposed fitting into my varifocals.

I can't fault the quality of my four frames. One pair in particular is beautifully light.

Extra thin lenses are included in the price, provided that your prescription warrants them ; ie regular lenses would be heavy.

That's weird. The standard varifocal they include is a shamir digital freeform varifocal. Much better than some optician's basic lens. Maybe the person you saw was new and didn't know that? (In the interests of honesty I have worked for them in the past so know this is the lens they use) also the upgrade to thinner lenses as required is amazing value. I have a really strong prescription and can't get the thinnest lenses as cheap where I work now as from there!

As I posted earlier, I believed that me inclusive Asda thinner lenses were the lightest grade, but ,today,my sister mentioned that she had to take her Asda glasses back to Specsavers for free lens replacement, as they had made a mistake with her prescription.

They told her that her Asda lenses were not of as light a grade as the lightest ones they sold and that they had given her their better ones.

She had no way of checking this, but does anyone know the grades used or whether the offer has changed since I bought mine, two years ago (prescription unchanged last year)?
