"Generation rent" - did ppl really marry in their 20s and buy a house?

:rotfl:Isnt this just a simple case of poorer people dont tend to buy houses whereas more affluent people do?
Well, something in that.
But, no, I don't think it's simply that.
It seems to be a matter of what's seen as normal, and that varies between different classes, maybe different regions, different age groups etc0 -
We saved a little for them in childhood so they maybe had a £1000 from that but they both worked at weekends and summer holidays from 15 years old and saved. We did fund them through uni though. My son had 100% mortgage and my daughter 95% ( she needed £3000 deposit) which you don't get now.ringo_24601 wrote: »There's hints of parental assistance here.. what with the daughter buying a house prior to working and being able to save a deposit
I would have struggled to buy my first home without my parents help.0 -
Yes - another social norm that has changed.
You have to now stay in school/education/training until 18 and 50% go to uni until 21/22.
Plenty of people left school at 16 when I was young.
Yes things have changed so much since the 70s it makes it very difficult to draw any conclusions.0 -
Don't forget we all have broadband too!
As you say its not in context, in adjusted terms we have 2 smart phones and landline and broadband for less my parents phone cost when they where my age.
The list goes on, compare a bluray player to a VCR compare a 40" LCD TV to a 24" colour CRT, technology has moved on and in short everything is a lot cheaper/more accessible.
Was having this conversation with my nephew, in short as the same age more or less the playstation 2 was released for me while the playstation 4 was release for him.
In the same terms I was still on a PS1 while he is still on a PS3, I got a 28" widescreen TV (CRT) for £250.00 while he got a 40" 1080p LCD for £210.
So by this logic as he is getting better games on a better TV for less money he should have to work a lot harder for a roof over his head?
But this what you miss I didn't have a phone or TV whilst saving or when I first moved in.0 -
Hmm well I bought my own house at 19 (in 2001) and married at 28. I also know plenty of people in their 20s who have bought houses in the last couple of years. It's the those who are not prepared to give up anything (iPads/ iPhones/ flash cars) who can't do it.
Hell, my friends and I had 15 year old bangers till we were driving 3-4 years... That doesn't seem to happen nowadays. Finance on a car then? Never0 -

What ARE you talking about?!!! Are you saying that if people give up their ipad and mobile phone - that means they could then afford buy a house?! :rotfl:
People need 30-40 grand or so for a deposit on a house! Do you seriously think that sacrificing an ipad and an iphone would make someone 30 to 40 grand better off? Oh dear!
And do you seriously think that people never had cars on finance in 2001? :rotfl: I had one on finance in the early 1990s!
The people trying to buy houses now are FAR more likely to find it much harder than people did 10 years back and beyond that, because of how STUPIDLY expensive they are now! They have gone up WAAAAAY over and above the rate of inflation. I can't believe anyone would suggest otherwise.
Why do you think so many go for shared ownership now? Hardly ANYone can afford the deposit to buy in full. You didn't, did you? :rotfl::rotfl:0 -

100% mortgages! I remember those! We needed a 10% deposit when we bought in '06.. so that was £20k! (and the £2k for stamp duty). That was for a little 2 bed terrace.. thanks London! We saved a little for them in childhood so they maybe had a £1000 from that but they both worked at weekends and summer holidays from 15 years old and saved.
