Colleagues unhappy with holiday form process

Queued up from 6:45am - There were 20 others in front of me to hand in their holiday form in. It was the same queue for everyone, regardless of the dept. I think the main reason for the long queue is because 26th December is not classed as a BH and therefore fewer hours in the annual leave pot than a normal BH.

My heart sank when I saw half of those colleagues in front of me are scheduled to work 26/12 as all but three including myself work alternative Saturdays.

I think I am 99% sure that I cannot get 26/12 off.

Many of us were not happy with the process as some departments have got nothing to do with us etc. I think its based on skills as some colleagues even though they work on one dept, they are skilled in another. So they help on that dept if they are short staffed etc.

I am not scheduled to work Xmas Eve, when there is more demand and flexibility in me working then than 26/12.. As on Xmas Eve we are open 13 hours and 26/12 7. I work 8 hours on Saturday. If I cannot get 26/12 off, I will ask the manager nicely to come up with a deal to work Xmas Eve. This means I will be working 6 days on the trot, though I can relax on Christmas Day than be on tenterhooks.

My Asian colleagues have no issue with getting Diwali etc off, even we are very short on staff during these times. I thinks its unfair that we Christians cannot get our holiday time. Though many Asians do agree to work 26/12 to help us out.

For those asking me to look for work elsewhere, I would be worse off as I walk to work, get 2 fewer weeks of annual leave and due to my eyesight, find it difficult to drive more than 10 min in the dark until I get a procedure on my eye.. Plus its pathetic to change jobs for just disagreeing on working one day.

We were busy on 26/12 as other shops were closed. Its just basically the general public cannot cope with the shops being closed for one day.

We are guessing we won't hear anything about the hols until mid Feb.

Not quite sure what you're asking, but if you're unhappy with something at work then the best first step is usually to try raising it with your line manager...

I do wish to go to church more, but my working hours prevent me.

I won't bother to approach management until forms are returned with the confirmed dates printed on and the weeks still able to book off highlighted.

I do so many favours at work in the past - such as staying on work for an extra hour because colleague ran in sick,, changed my hours half an hour before I go into work as they messed up on the schedule etc.I have done 5 already this year, plus I had a week off! I hardly asked them to do favours for me. This asking to work Xmas Eve instead of 26/12 is worth 25 favours.

Most of my colleagues have relatives that live less than 10 miles. Apart from my parents, my other relatives live 2 hours drive away. My colleagues have the 'luxury' of able to finish work at a reasonable time and going to see their relatives. Whilst I don't. Plus, I have not seen my relatives much last year because Mum broke her leg and spend my spare time sorting her out than spending time with my relatives.

I even get my trade union rep to help me.

Hmm, if you were a practising Christian complaining about not being able to have Good Friday, Easter Sunday or Christmas Day off, you would have a case, but St Stephen's Day/Boxing Day/26 Dec is not a Christian religious festival so your argument here is completely inappropriate.
Somebody has to work 26/Dec - you've already said that you aren't scheduled to work Christmas Eve so it sounds like you have a good break even if you won't get 26/12 off.

Fortunately the law forces my work to close Easter Sunday and Christmas Day. I don't work Fridays so no issue with able to get GF off.

I completely disagree, religion should not be brought into the workplace at all! This is fair for all employees.

How do you get "get 2 fewer weeks of annual leave" ?

You all get the same amount.
