My Grand daughter is employed on a zero hour contract by a Bournemouth Hotel, whilst quite happy to get her to work the unsocial hours last summer and at Christmas and the New Year, they have not given her any hours for the last 3 weeks and have just advised her, after her visit to the hotel to enquire, that no hours are available until nearer Easter. She is just 17+. Is the hotel liable to pay any Nat Ins etc? and is she able to claim any financial help? Obviously she is now seeking alternative employment although the Hotel haven't dismissed her.
Unfortunately this seems to be the norm with the current employment situation.

            Should be claiming JSA.
Hotel only have to pay for the time she works, and holiday pay for those hours.0

Not unusual in the hotel trade, everything goes deathly quiet from Jan to Easter, and the holiday season kicks off again. Same for the museum/heritage industry, I'm lucky that the museum I work for is still giving me 12 hours which I am topping up with a day's holiday a week.
Does she have any holiday accrued that she could use?0

After attending our local Jobcentre this morning,we were refered to the main Bournemouth Jobcentre as they were unable to deal with under 18's. At the main office a lady of 20 years experience advised she didn't know and wrote a phone number on a scrap of paper for us to phone for information!!! Later a supervisor advised that she wasn't entitled to any benefits/job-seekers allowance etc. However if she lived with us,her Grand parents, she would be entitled..I did note the place was full of the usual suspects and each office had 2 G/4 security guards on duty.
 Welcome to the U.K. today.0

The usual suspects? A relative has fallen on hard times, yet you still tar us (people claiming jobseekers) all with the same brush?
I thought the same about the job centre, until I started signing on in October and found actually the majority of the people are genuinely looking for work. I've also found the staff extremely sympathetic, professional, and extremely willing to help (to the point that when I do get a job, I'll certainly send the centre a thank-you note).0
