  • Good evening:wave:

Just having a little catch up:)

Reading the blog does make you think... Specifically for me, as you can imagine living in Yorkshire with a heavy mining industry until it all went pear shaped...
Looking back on my childhood I know mum and dad struggled... although at the time we weren't aware of it. My nan had a knitting machine and a sewing machine, mum and nan would spend hrs making my sister and I new clothes or mending, increasing the size, length of old ones that were still in good condition. Central heating didn't exist in our house. My sister and I shared a room and every night dad would put the portable gas bottle heater in our room before bed to take off the chill. We had hot water bottles to warm up the bed and in winter we would have a bath in the baby bath in front of the living room fire.(until we grew too big to sit in it) Our tv was also rented and wash day was once a week when mum would spend nearly all day at the twin tub doing all our washing.
But do you know what I can never remember a time where she moaned. This was life and she made the best if it. We had a warm meal every night and most importantly we were loved.
We'd spend Sunday afternoon walking in the fields, in summer picking blackberries and in winter sat at the kitchen table making models with empty boxes and glue made from flour and water. We very rarely had meals out, well maybe the odd cone of chips and a panda pop:)

I look back on my childhood with fond memories, not rich in material things, but rich in experience and skills. I learnt to knit, sew, make pompoms, cook, make my own entertainment with what toys we did have.

I think my childhood shaped the person I am today. I have the philosophy in life that if I haven't the money for it then I don't need, want it. I hate interest free credit on anything and only last year got a credit card.

We all live in a disposable society, in general we dont make do anymore. But I would like my children to grow up realizing the value of things, not growing up to think that what you have or haven't got shapes you as a person. That's not what makes you who you are.

Apologies, I didn't expect to ramble for long... It was quite thought provoking and brought back lots of memories I thought I'd share:)

Dropped it at waitrose round the corner as they have a permanent collection point there. Had about 5 bags of stuff and pretty much filled the container!

I picked up my two John Lewis bears today. They're a pretty decent size and so soft! Really impressed.
