Yes car credit

Over ten years ago I was in a difficult financial position with my then partner and needed a car to work. Due to our position the only place to get finance to get a car was 'yes car credit'. It was a joint financial agreement between myself and my ex partner and we both used the car but the money for the car came out of my wages.
We kept payments up with no issues until a change of circumstances and we started to struggle. I contacted yes car credit as there was a clause in the contract that said we could surrender the car back and would only be eligible to pay back a certain amount of the outstanding load. They came and collected the car-which was in immaculate condition and could be sold on by yes car credit. But a few months later we had a debt collector turn up demanding payment for the full amount out standing. I have contacted yes car credit who said because they collected the car means I did not surrender it!!
Since then I have split with my partner and been left paying for the full amount outstanding. I have been paying £35 a month for the last 8+ years as it is all I can afford as a single parent.
So not only did they get the car back in full working condition, they are also getting the full amount of the loan paid back.

Can anyone help or give me any advice? My only concern is if I am entitled to anything that my ex partner will get some money as his name is on the contract. He has not paid anything towards the debt-as the debt collector said he would not pursue him as he is getting the money off me. The only option to make him pay towards it would be to stop the payments and make the company take us to court-which obviously I don't want as it will affect my credit report.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!
