AAT help with starting again

I studied AAT level 2 about 7 year's ago, but did not finish the course to the next level.
I did want to pick up where I left off, but was told a couple of year's ago that I would need to start again as the qualification had changed.
What I would like to do is study it again at level 2, but by just buying the books and taking the exam by myself rather than using a training provider as it seems a bit pointless. I'd like to start soon, then I would go on to study level 3 at my local college in September.
I am finding it hard to get info on this, it seems very complicated.
Does anyone know how to go about this?

It's fairly straightforward.
Get yourself registered with AAT and Google 'AAT test centres'. You can book the exam direct without booking any training courses, though some of the test centres might try convince you you also need to enrol on their training courses.0 -
Great. I've just phoned up AAT, my initial registration still stands so I just need to pay the annual fee to them. They were really helpful.
Thanks for your advice on the training centres, I'll see if the local college will let me sit the exam there. I'll have to look out for second hand books now.0 -
Make sure you're not too late for entry for this Summer's exams. I don't know the AAT deadlines, but do remember having to enter very early for ACCA many, many years ago. Well worth checking to make sure you're not going to be too late.0

You can buy the books directly from bpp or kaplan I think. You can probably also get them from Amazon, or even somewhere like Ebay.
Have a look on the AAT website - I'm sure there will be a list of places you can sit exams as an external candidate.
Failing that, just phone your nearest college/centres that do AAT and ask i they take external students and how much it would cost. I think BPP whilst having regular students will also take externals so you can always go to your nearest big city to do exams if necessary.

Edit: I know a couple of people who did Level 2 through home study so it can be done but I think for Level 3 you would probably struggle to do it at home (although you could look into a home learning course).Making my money go further with MSE :j

I thought I could sit the exam at any time - I'll have to look in to that.
Re. the books, I'm still not sure which ones I need, I need to phone AAT again and find out.
Level 2 as home study should be a piece of cake for me, as I have done it all already. Although I've probably forgotten everything, it should come back to me!0 -
You can sit the exams any time. Kaplan centres let you book just exams without taking the courses. You might need to book a while in advance though but it just depends on demand really.
Books wise I'd recommend BPP but that's personal preference - Kaplan and Osbourne are also available. My Debt Free Diary

what level would you need to atain to get a job as a trainee payroll assistant or trainee book-keeper?
(I used to think that 'trainee' meant that no skills/experience/qualifications were required, but that is no longer the case. They all want a degree or experience/qualificaions in the subject. Just not sure what level they require)0 -
Thanks Claree.
Can anyone show me a link or help me by listing the exact books I need?
Thanks for tips on BPP being good, I thought of Kaplan though, as I know the Kaplan centre for when I do the exam.

Ot what about this sort of job?:
My client based in London is on the look out for a trainee Purchase Ledger clerk to join their team on an ongoing temporary basis.
Duties include:
*High volume invoice processing
*Raising invoices
*Purchase ledger from start to finish
*Loading invoices
*Allocation of cash
The ideal candidate will have the above experience or relevant qualifications, have a great eye for detail, and be able to work in a high pressured environment. The ideal candidate will be immediately available.
As is always teh case, even trainee roles actually want experience and qualifications.
What do I need exactly? is there a 'purchase ledger' course I can take to get me a job for example?0 -

The link above will take you to the right section. Osbourne books only stock the current editions so you'll be getting the correct ones. I didn't bother with the wise guide books when i did my level 2. The AAT website has some good resources for revising etc when you log in.0
