Getting duplicate P60 (not from employer)

Hi,

My previous employer provided a (2013-14) P60 by email to a work email address, which I no longer have access to since leaving the company. I have requested a duplicate from them but they say they do not have a copy, so I have a requested a statement of earnings from them instead, since I believe they are legally obliged to retain this information for 3 years.

I've not yet heard anything back from them and as I didn't leave on great terms I wouldn't be surprised if they don't reply.

Is there another method I can get this information before Jan 31st?

Thanks!

  • In 6 working days? No, there is nothing that requires them to respond within such tight timescales

Thanks. How else can I get this information other than via the employer? Do I contact HMRC?
  • The tax office cannot provide you with a duplicate P60, only your former employer can do this. They may be able to provide you with the information you require, presumably for your self assessment given your deadline, but have to say that with my personal experience of speaking to HMRC I would neither hold my breath nor trust what they tell me (through their poor records rather than maliciousness).

Is there anyone at the employers still that you were on good terms with when you left who could push things along for you from the inside? Im guessing this was a small company without a formal HR etc?
  • If you were still employed by them on 6 April 2014, can you not take YTD figures from your last payslip of the tax year?

This is assuming you need the figures to put on a self assessment or something and not an official document/letter you have to send elsewhere as proof.

Just a suggestion if there's no chance of getting the figures from the company.

I think all my payslips for that period are also trapped in my old work email, I'll have a hunt but even then my pay changed during that period so I don't think I could calculate it from just one :(

They have an HR women but she is the problem unfortunately. I'll see if I can contact anyone else there without them referring me to her.
  • I do sympathise, I lost mine too but I am the boss so simply asked for a duplicate payslip.

Try ringing up and asking who does the PAYROLL - this is quite likely to be separate from the HR function. All you need is .. well, actually I found I needed TWO things, the payslip for March and a previous p60 which told me what my employer's reference number was. So when you get the earnings and tax paid, remember to ask about the emp refno as well.

Might be worth ringing HMRC NOW (they will get busier and busier as the month grinds on) and asking their advice. You have nothing to lose - worst case scenario is that you can't get through to them.

In the worst case scenario you could always estimate, tell HMRC in the comments section of the return you have estimated and explain why. They will be able to find the info easily enough - it's a lot better than not getting a return in on time.
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • I just rang up HMRC.

They cannot produce a duplicate but they can provide you with the information you need for an accountant to complete a self assessment for you.

I phoned up, went through the security checks, was apologetic and polite and they gave me all the information I required.

    Hope this helps someone else.
