Co-Op membership cards

I've heard you get money credited to your bank account or money off vouchers if you buy stuff at the Co-Op with a Co-Op card. Could anyone fill me in on how much you get when you spend at Co-Op?

    It varies :

Essentially, you get a share of their profits, based on how much you have spent over the year. The more you spend, the bigger share you get. But there's no "fixed" ratio between points and cash, as there is with many other loyalty cards - it depends on how much profit they make each year.
  • I wouldn't get too excited about the money you're going to claim back, I just went to check my account, I've had the card for about 3 years and I have earned a whopping 75p!

And surely that will have been in the early period of your membership because they have not been able to pay a dividend for some time now. IIRC the first £1 you earn provides the one-off life-time membership fee.

Of course there have also been member-only offers in the last couple of years which could have saved you money at the time.

It's not vast amounts of money, I can't remember my dividend amount without checking, but it obviously depends how much you spend there. If you're a student and have an NUS card, you can get a further 10% off every time you shop.

Although it might not look like much, I get money off vouchers almost every time I shop in there- usually £1 off a £10 spend, £2 off a £20 spend. Again, how much you spend with them, determines the size of your voucher. In addition, whenever a local store gets refurbed, I've had vouchers, like £5 off a £20 spend and £2 off a £10 spend. At Christmas I had 1x £5 off £20 and 3 or 4 £2 off £20. Those vouchers are not insignificant over the course of a year.

  • I managed to get a card when I took my mortgage out with them - for the first 2 years the payout was then linked to the mortgage which was quite a good deal, problem is there are not many co-op stores in my area

Don't forget that there is more than one Co-Op scheme in place and they all operate as separate entities.

The card you can apply for at the former Somerfield stores, Co-OP Funeral parlours, chemists and travel agents is operated by CWS (the wholesale arm) so only works in those stores and not the regional ones (unless an agreement has been negotiated between the national and regiona Co-Ops).

Likewise, the cards issued by the regional Co-Ops can only be used within that region.
For instance, I'm a member of the East of England Co-op, but I cannot use my dividend card at the 'Co-op Food' branded store near me as it is owned by CWS rather than the regional group.

I can, however, use it at AHF (a furniture store owned by Peterborough Co-op) because they have a reciprical agreement in place.

When I phoned to ask why I'd not received any dividends last year, I was told they'd made no profit so there was no payout in 2014 at all. I'm in Scotland.

As a previous poster mentioned, I use the money off vouchers and NUS card for an extra 10% off.

My local region paid-out 1p/£1 in dividend.
