    Hi OP

I hope the following may help.

If you have arthritis and are overweight then I would go swimming rather than the gym. Best exercise for anyone with joint or mobility problems. I pay just over £20 PCM to our local Council Leisure Centre and this includes unlimited swimming, gym and fitness classes. There are more gentle activities such as yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi.

I go to aquaerobics twice a week as it is a very good workout plus you get to meet the same people so it is a bit social as well.

I have been referred to Weight Watchers free for 12 weeks and if I lose 2% of my body weight (which is a very small weight loss) I get another 12 weeks free. I can also get some free gym sessions. It is worth talking to your GP again to see if any sessions can be offered free. Ours is funded by the County Council.

Anyway, whatever you decide, good luck with it;)

Don't pay for either. Use myfitnesspal to monitor your calorie intake and lose the weight. Go running on the pavement or in a park. If all you need to do is lose weight, then you don't need the weights and workout parts of the gym, just the cardio, so running, cycling or swimming would be fine. If you can run outside for free then just do it.
  • For your fitness you must join good gym, take proper diet. Spend some quality time for your health . It will definitely work out.

For many running is not an option. I was told after my knee replacement not to run, even if I could. I would like to ride a bike but cannot as my knee won't bend enough (even under general anaesthetic the orthopaedic surgeons couldn't get it to bend any more:mad:).

That is why, for me, and for others with similar problems, swimming is best.
  • Gym wins hands down, what you need is not going to be provided by slimming, the feel good factor from exercise will be better than the overweight club. I think you should take confidence from the fact you want to change how you feel. Good luck and don't give up.
Do you have a fitness blog? Would you like free 'branded' sports nutrition products to review? If so then PM me for details...
