welll this is another intruiging problem ^-^
First is first.. What operating system are you using? If vista, its known to be very buggy still, but by the sounds of it your using XP (as you seem familiar with the "internet icon"..) so just want to clarify.
Ok.. so you have 2 machines connected to livebox.. one works, one doesnt...
On the laptop do my instructions from the other thread:
start > run
cmd
ping 64.233.183.103
enter.
If you get replys it means that its connected but the DNS is the problem. If you get timeouts, then its not properly connected. If it only comes up with "Windows IP Configuration", then there's a problem with your network adapter.
Start > Control Panel > administrative tools > event logs.
There should be some errors in the "System" section which would explain why it isn't shutting down when you're telling it to. There must be something blocking it for example and that may say.
If its new, could you possible just format, reinstall windows and start from scratch? could be easier![FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Why would it be doing this if its new? Could it be a crap laptop? It is Sony!
It did the ping thing ok, now when I double click on internet it comes up with a dial-up box!
Why would I have to format it already? I don't think I have the disks?
OH thinks I am a computer expert when I haven't a clue! but he is worse then me! I think I may cry soon! :rolleyes:Angel

You say its new? And Sony does have good quality products... to be honest, if its out of box and doing this, you could just replace it under warranty (i'm not sure if formatting would break warranty but i assume its only hardware and not software covered
)
Interesting that the ping thing works....
If its coming up with a dial up box it doesnt realise that it can get the internet through the livebox. When you first connected it to your other machine, did you have to use any software to "register" the machine with the livebox etc?
it looks like its receiving the internet connection but is stopping your machine from using it.... In internet options you can turn the dial up off completely and select "auto detect internet connection" somewhere around in the connections/advanced tab.
If you bought new you should have been given maybe recovery disks etc.... I'm a bit confused on the shutdown prob if theres nothing in the event log...
If the ping to 64.233.183.103 works, try going to:
http://64.233.183.103
If that comes up with google we know 100% its a dns issue, but I think you have to register the machine on the livebox to use the internet... Virgin Media do that so I would assume other ISP's own hardware requires the same![FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

IE, Tools, options, Connections, Never dial a connection. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

I don't understand the event log - there is loads of stuff in there!
My Oh held the button on the laptop down which apparently overides anything. So thats not a problem for now! I Just need to set it up to the internet now!
I am just cross that we have to sort out problems with this already!
Should there be something different in the 'Dial-up and Virtual Network settings' bit in tools>Internet options>Connections?Angel

Its not healthy to shut down your laptop like that everytime and can cause major corruption resulting in blue screens of death!
Are there loads of "errors" in the event log under system (an error being a white cross on red circular background). If so, shut down your computer (make a note of time) by doing it properly. When it doesnt work go into event log, find the event for that time with the error, and copy and paste the confusing stuff in the errorMaybe we can see whats causing it!
There shouldn't be anything different no. Just ensure it never dials a connection as espresso suggests.[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

GRR I am getting really annoyed with it!
The Explorer is blank and I clicked on Tools internet options and it hasn't done anything! The computer has not frozen it just doesn't want to do what I ask it!!
...Ok I typed in Google just for it to respond to something and it is saying #This page cannot be displayed. And let me into tools! ... whats that about!?
anyway in the connections there is just a dial up thingy for the company and 'never dial connection' is selected!Angel
