hi hope someone can help us,
my partner received a letter from RW saying they had written to our previous address and was given our new address as contact, the first letter was asking if my partner was at this new address if so to make contact. Letter 1 did not say who they were or what they wanted. I googled who they were and found they were debt collectors. I have been with my partner for over 7 years and not once has she been in debt. I researched advice and initially every one said ignore the first letter and they will write back with more info.
We have now received letter 2 stating my partner owes nearly £400 it doesn't state what the debt is for, to whom it is owed or when the debt arose.
Please can some one advise me as to what the correct coarse of action would be from now, anyone's help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi
Thanks for the response. My partner thinks the only thing it could be is a cable tv company about 7 and half years ago when she left a previous partner he ran up a bill that was in her name when she left the address. At the time she rang the said company and was under the impression it was all sorted. But being over 7 years ago if it was this debt wouldn't it be statute barred? We won't be incriminating ourselves by making contact with RW will we because as yet they haven't even had confirmation that my partner even lives at our new address.0 -
It depends whether you are comfortable ignoring their letters. Now they have this address they are likely to use it.
If you want to start the process to bring this to an end, send the prove-it.0 -
Send the prove it letter. As they are likely to continue to send stuff.
after 7+ years! it's statute barred. Nothing you do will change that.:beer:0 -
Ok I will send this, would it be acceptable to email rather thN a written letter as I do not have access to a printer?0
-
Yes, that's fine.
If they ignore and continue to send stuff, lodge a complaint. It can also be done via email.:beer:0 -

Hi NEW UPDATE.
I emailed RW, I am dealing with all contact on behalf of my partner, RW have written back saying they do not hold written authority to deal with me and that they want a signed letter for me to act on her behalf!? To be honest I have heard about all kinds of underhand tactics by RW and I'm a bit dubious as to send them a copy of my partners signature. Also I don't really want to even start spending money on recorded delivery etc when there isn't even a debt owed by us!! Surelly as I am responding to there letters that is proof my partner is allowing me to deal with this as the letters are addressed to her.0 -
Yes, either she needs to give you authority to act or she needs to send the prove-it herself.0
