Laptop won't turn off

Hello guys - I need some help please. I installed some windows vista updates, and when I shut down the laptop, it goes through the normal processes, says logging off, then shutting down, then the screen goes black, but laptop remains on. My power indicator is lit up, the fan still runs. The only way to get it to physically shut down is to hold the power button down. I did a system restore but the problem still exists. Any advise please as to what I can do to sort this out.

Can you start the laptop in Safe Mode and then try to shut it down and see if the problem still occurs? This way you can find out if it's hardware or software related.
To boot in safe mode, turn on your laptop and press and hold F8 until the Windows option menu pops up, then select "start windows in safe mode".0
