Well we have finally taken the right step and are now waiting for the pack to arrive to set up the DMP with StepChange. They estimate that we will be debt free in 6 years 7 months. I was expecting it to be more than that to be honest, so am quite pleased as that means I will be just past my 64th birthday when it is all finished ....provided all creditors agree to stop the interest obviously.
I was sat here alone doing the form, as hubby has gone out to see his parents and when I got to the last page I couldn't look...was so worried it was going to say they couldn't help us. I have a few questions I still need answering about it, but I will put that on a different post.
Just wanted to share my news......can't wait for the start up pack to arrive now:j and get it all going

Hi Ploppy
We applied for our StepChange DMP packlast Monday - so you & I will be practically starting the DMP journey at just about the same time. StepChange forecast slightly longer for us to clear our debts (assuming interest is frozen) - but whatever it takes, just knowing we are doing something about it has been like lifting a massive weight off our shoulders.
We are also sorting this all out in time for our retirement - hopefully we will have a few years of being able to save after the debts are cleared and before we actually retire, but whatever, we will have a debt free retirement
Wishing you the very best for your DFW journey - I will watch our for your posts and if you start a diary I will subscribe.DFW Nerd No. 1484 LBM 07/01/15 Debt was £95k  Now debt free and happy :j0 -

Hi, yes we will be getting into this about the same time by the look of it. I am hoping to get it all sorted ASAP, I will let you know. Good luck with your journey.xThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Well done on taking the first (and biggest) step! Things will improve beyond measure for you now, all being well. I know my credit record is trashed for the short term but a DMP helped me get back on my feet.
As my debts came off the back of being a student, I've never really known how to manage my own money before, so as well as getting rid of the debts while I'm still young, it's also taught me a lot about managing my money.
I've learned the importance of saving, and I know what my minimum income per month needs to be to meet all my essential bills and costs if anything went wrong with my job.
It's a great feeling to get out of the other side! A great feeling to look forward to, I promise you.Debt free on 2nd January 2015Next savings goals:£5k emergency fund£4k holiday of a lifetime fund0 -
It's always a massive step, but once it's done you can feel that weight lift almost instantly from your shoulders
Good luck 0
