Places to stay on the outskirts of London

We are planning to go to London next weekend, but are driving down and so are looking for somewhere nice to stay on the outskirts of London that has easy public transport access into and out of the city (including late in the evening).
As I don't know London very well at all, I don't know where to start looking.
We want somewhere nice, but not so nice it's extortionately expensive, and that's no more than half an hour or so away from the West End.
Any ideas?
Many thanks

An indication of where you are driving from would be helpful.0

I assume that as you are planning to be out until late at night, then you just need somewhere basic and clean to get a good nights sleep. Just had a quick look and the Premier Inn has some good rates for next weekend for hotels not far from the M1 and they do a good buffet type breakfast, you can book as an extra. Edgware PI is £54 for friday, £56 for Sat and £43 for Sunday with free parking. The tube station is 5- 10 minutes walk. 30-35 minute journey direct from Edgware on the tube to Waterloo for the London Eye, Big Ben,House of Parliament, boats to the Tower etc. 35 mins direct journey to Leicester Square and 5 mins tube journey from there to South Kensington for the museums. 25 min direct journey to Euston For British Museum and then 5 mins to Victoria and then walk to Buckingham Palace. 40 minutes to Tower Gateway for Tower of London. You would need to check the times of the last trains from the centre of London but the last train probably arrives about 1am at Edgware, but there will be night buses running , but these will be less frequent with a longer journey time. 10 minute drive to the RAF Museum at Hendon. You could also drive to the Stanmore tube station, if you did not fancy walking to Edgware tube station, which has a large car park as it is 5-10 minutes drive and £2 for all day parking on a Sat and £1.50 for Sunday or free disabled parking.

Harrow has free parking (and beside a Beefeater for eating breakfast and meals) and is opposite the Kenton bakerloo tube station and 10 minutes walk to the Northwick Park metropolitan line tube station. £70 Fri, £63 for Sat and £54 for Sunday. Kenton station to Waterloo is about 25 minutes of a direct journey. 45 mins to South Kensington which a couple of tube line changes to South Kensington, 20 Mins to Green Park and walk to Buckingham Palace.

You can use contacless bank card, oyster card or a daily travelcard purchased from the tube station for travel on London buses, tubes and trains.0 -
Park Royal isn't overly glamorous, but there's a Holiday Inn Express on Gypsy Corner (right on the main road), stayed there a couple of times, has parking, clean, comfortable, nice views over the city at sunrise if you stay 5th floor :-) It used to be one of the highlights of my week watching that sunrise!0

If your new to London and its transport system why in the doickens would to want to travel late at night to the outskirts . often not even money saving as your travelling in and out ( is there more than one person ) cost a few bob . look closer into the city . consider getting a train from lime street station to Euston .its about £40 each way average stress free and often can get it for less . also I would go down the M40 into the smoke . easier . hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

If your thinking of staying around wembley then there is also the Novotel Wembley a new hotel very close to wembley park station with good reviews on tripadvisor. They have prices for 69 pounds for Friday or Saturday night while 60 pounds for Sunday night on expedia.0

how late into the evening? mainline trains actually run much later than the tube...the tube shuts down around midnight. I can still get half-hourly, then hourly trains all through the night out to Luton. (journey time is a little longer tho)0

Last minute, budget hotels in the centre of London will cost considerably more and fares to outer London travel zones do not cost that much more. A zone 1-6 off peak daily travelcard costs the same as a zone 1 travel card. There is only 50p in the difference between a zone 1 or zone1-4 (Kenton and Wembley in zone 4) single tube journey using pay as you go or 80p of a difference between zone 1 and zone 1-5 (Edgware). The main difference is the travelling time from the outer zone into London IMO, but often worth it to make considerable savings on hotel costs, that can be used to pay for other activities.

If for example OP stayed at the Premier Inn in Covent Garden it would cost £219 for next Friday and Sat night, but only £110 for Edgware for the same stay, so a saving of £109 on staying centrally versus staying on the outskirts for a 2 night stay.
OP, for the future, if you plan to come to London again, Megabus do coach fares to and from Liverpool from £1 each way, plus a 50p booking fee, if you book as soon as they roll out the fares (currently £21 return fare per person for next weekend).
OP, have a look at the group buying sites such as Groupon, Amazon local, Wowcher as they have some good deals often for tours and eating out. I think I saw a recent boat tour one on Amazon local (if the weather improves for your stay).0 -
Susan brilliant advice . needing your help soon . treating my DD and friend to a 2 night London break . I think central London as they get lost between the dining room and the kitchen with their plates . aged 18 & 17 . looking at train line / mega bus deals either train or bus .. For the first weekend in April from Liverpool area . hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0
