Would you take a job offer from a friend?

Options
A friend of mine's offered me a job working for his company (when he gets it all running). I'm not sure whether I should take it because:
  • He changes his mind over the starting salary (sometimes he'll say 20k, sometimes he'll say 25k).
  • He has said it'd all be above board, with PAYE salary.
  • He's not put anything about the job in writing, not even in an email.
  • I've heard from other friends things about his previous business ventures that make me a little worried.
  • He's openly told me that he's got a prior CCJ.
At the moment, I help him out with his computer tasks, but this is an occasional thing, and I'm really not sure that I want to work for him :undecided, even on a part-time basis...

Any advice appreciated.

  • Sounds like a bad idea that's only going to end in tears.. the way I'd go for it is if he put it all in writing and ran it past someone to check its all legal

Thanks, ringo - that's exactly what I was thinking.

Doesn't sound like he's taking himself seriously in business and doesn't respect you very much either and the job hasn't even started yet! Its rarely a good idea to take a job with a friend as your employer. The dynamics of the friendship would completely change for a start. I don't see why the CCJ puts you off unless you think it shows he's proud of not honouring his past committments in which case it would put me off as well. Stay away is my advice.

Doesn't sound too promising from what you say. How about offering to work on a sub-contracting/self-employed basis so you don't have the full commitment? Even then, how good is his credit to guarantee your payments when they are due?

tbh it doesnt sound convincing the offer espscially if hes changing his mind alot of time. i think there needs to be some solid writing on paper before anything is decided
