What do I save PM's as?

Options
Before I've saved PM's as XML & CSV cos I don't know what either of them means (yes I know I could look it up!! ;) ). I've just saved them and this time instead of ordered text it has just strung all the words together on the page making it difficult to work out what's what.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?!

I usually save them by hitting the text button but that doesn't make for easy reading of them either icon11.gif

Html would make a nicer format.

Also, is it possible to merge Sent and Inbox folders for downloading, so that the stream of replies back and forth will be contiguous?

I looked into this ages ago - from what I can remeber...

xml can be opened by most browsers and word but it doesn't display very well. Apparantely you can make an xslt style sheet (or something else beginning with x? icon10.gif) to convert it into a view like you would see them like in mse

Csv can be opened by excel. It keeps things in order so It's good if you want to keep things in a database of some sort. Maybe we need an excel genius to make something that will display them properly in a spreadsheet

Text seems the easiest way - But what annoys me is that you cannot move texts into/out of the sent folder. Why is this important? Because if you could get your sent/received pms in the same folder then you could save all your text messages in chronological order and read them like a conversation. Wonder if there's a way to change the way folders work?

 huh? what are you all on about????
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

If you go to your private messages page, there are options at the bottom:

Download all Private Messages as :
    XML | CSV | Text

I discovered something of a problem; a gremlin in the system?

I've downloaded PMs as text by pressing the button at the bottom as described. The other day I realised that the file I thought was from the Inbox had Sent Items in it - silly, I must have pressed the wrong button I thought, must be more careful as I've lost those.

No, the same thing happened today; 2 copies of Sent Items folder.

Instead, highlight all the messages required by ticking the boxes, then use the Selected Messages drop-down box

edit - I realised only a few days ago that all the messages are downloaded each time the button is pressed - there is no selection made and Sent Items and Inbox are added end to end not merged

I've thought of an idea to merge the messages as we discussed - but it doesn't seem to work, so can I ask for help.

In User CP or Messages, select Edit Folders. Define a new folder called All. Move all the messages from the Inbox and from Sent Items to this new folder; they should then be in chronological order. Then download from this.

Edit - see above post - all items are downloaded anyway

That's the theory. The trouble is when I select move to folder and press the Go button, I expect to be asked to select a destination folder, but a lot of the screen is empty.

I've noticed that the Callchecker and Search functions occasionally do this. Is there something odd with my Java (recently updated), or is it about pop-ups being blocked (though I get no remark about it)?

I have XPSP2 and Sun Java 1.5.0. Maybe I'll have to put this on Tech Board

There's no way to get them out of the sent folder

not an mse thing - it's the way it's designed. I've seen the ability to move them requested on vb's own forums
