Made to change doctor

I got a letter from my doctors surgery the other day saying that I had to change to another surgery because my address falls outside the catchment area for their surgery.
My surgery is in Belfast and I have been with it since birth.
I have been living in Antrim for the past 15 years and very rarely go to the doctors for anything.
I would like to stay with them as any of the surgeries in Antrim are pretty dire.
Can they make me change and if I refuse can they refuse to treat me?
I can't understand why they are only doing this now after all this time:mad:

I moved out of Belfast but wanted to keep my doctors so used a friends address, after 4 years finally considering moving doctors to near home!

In my experience it depends on the doctors surgery. They have to agree to keep you on and you have to agree that you won't receive house calls, but not every surgery is willing to do this. My current doctors is in East Belfast however I now live in Newtownards, no problem. When I moved from Ballynahinch to Belfast it was a straight no, you must move doctors

At the time when I first moved they explained about the whole home visits thing and I was happy with this, can't understand why they are doing this after all these years...

Budgets??????? When was the last time you were at the doctors?
I've no idea how Dr's get paid but does it relate to numbers "on the books" or patients treated? Could it be to do with something along these lines...... just guessing here....

Thing is,I hardly ever go to the doctors, must be at least 5 years since I was last there,so it's not as if I'm a major drain on time or resources!!!
Will ring them tomorrow and see if I can sort it out...

If you had a wardrobe which has limited space and in it you have a jumper which you hadn't wore for 5 years, would you leave it there or throw it out to make room for one you would wear quite often??...............

Maybe your just "taking up space" in his surgery numbers??
