can I rescue sugary tablet?

I tried to make (scottish) tablet last night and, following an article I saw online, melted the milk, butter and condensed milk on a low heat in the microwave. I THOUGHT it had worked quite well, but obviously it didn't as I am left with a very sugary mess. It goes against the grain, and all my OS principles, to chuck it out, so am asking for help on here. Any suggestions will be most gratefully received.

It sounds to me like it may not have got hot enough to melt the sugar. Whenever I've made tablet I've brought the sugar to a boil before adding the condensed milk.

The only thing I can think of would be to pop it on the stove and bring it to the boil again. Then turn it down to continue the simmer and leave (stirring often) for 10 mins or so. I'm just not sure what the boiling will do to the condensed milk. May be worth a try though
  • I would second melting it down again and bring it back to the boil for a short time and then remove from the stove and beat with a wooden spoon until it crystalises around the edges of the pan, then you can pour in to prepared tin and leave to set . Take a look the link I'm posting as it's got step by step photos and tips to help see what it should look like as you go along http://scruss.com/tablet.html
  • Thank you for taking the trouble to reply. I am most grateful for your help (both of you). I will let you know how I get on.

when making tablet it is important to dissolve the sugar slowly I use a wooden spoon to stir and you shouldn't feel any grains of sugar on the bottom of the pan then you can boil the mix

It means the same as 'making cake' this is 'making tablet' I understand its similar to kendal mint cake, which could get confusing as that is not cake.
  • it's like a bit like making fudge but does have a similar texture to kendal mint cake see here http://scruss.com/tablet.html
  • This is something I really have to try looks Yummy. However am I the only one to read this and think O No someones tipped a sticky drink all over their I pad.
