Using "whitening" toothpastes ..eg oral B

I have some oral B toothpaste at the moment that is a kind of gel which clearly contains abrasives.

I think i only bought it due to brand etc

Surely such pastes are bad news for long term use?

What are the best toothpastes for long term dental care?

I already use a fine soft manual brush so that the bristles slip into the small gum/tooh interface..
