UK Citizenship and mortgage (first time buyer)

Hello all,

I am a foreign national (EEA country) and have been living in the UK for 12 years and am married to a UK citizen. We are in the process of starting to look for our first property to buy and I am wondering whether I should go through getting a citizenship first.

I have been told by my bank that they are OK with my status as I am a long term customer but friends have advised that I seek mortgages through independent advisers as well and that my citizenship status may then work against me.

I would be keen to hear your views and perhaps any experiences you may have had.

Many thanks

Viv

    You do not need it.

An EU citizen with more than three years UK residence will have no problem getting a mortgage with any lender.

    You have been unnecessarily alarmed.

Thanks for a quick reply Kingstreet.

The fact that I am not on the electoral roll (EEA national are not allowed on there) counts against me on Experia Credit rating - is this something mortgage advisers can overlook?

A credit record visible on your credit file will help you look more attractive to potential lenders.

Credit reference agencies don't lend money. Until they do, take no notice of their "scores" and do not pay for them!
