Reproofing/waterproofing a jacket

I don't know if this is the right forum but I have a question about reproofing a Berghaus jacket.

The jacket is fairly old now but was expensive originally, so it's not something I want to dispose of if it can be 'brought back to life' reasonably cheaply.

So, the question is: what product do I use and how is it done? I've seen sprays and stuff that you put in the washing machine but am nervous of wrecking the washer.

  • I have a waterproof jacket and I wash mine in the washing machine using an eco ball rather than detergent. Detergent is supposed to cause problems with the fabric/water proofing. I use eco balls anyway so it isn't a problem for me. I think you can buy products to wash with that don't cause the problems that detergent causes.

I then use a spray called superpruf to respray it with. I find it quite effective and it is suitable for breathable fabric. Use it outside or in a well ventilated area though as it smells quite strong until it dries.

My jacket is not waxed though, if yours is waxed then perhaps someone can help.

There are several products out there - I usually use nikwax wash-in though other washins and sprays are available. You generally have to clean the coat first using a non detergent. You can often get deals on Nikwax tech wash and wash in reproofer in outdoor shops or online.
Do check the blurb on the product though as some reproofers need to be tumble dried to activate (ok if you have a tumble dryer!).
It'll never be as good as when the coat was new but will definitely extend the life of the coat for a long time - and smarten you up!
There's no danger to the washer though you will need to check the coat's care label as they generally only tolerate a gentle wash setting.

If the jacket is waxed then you can send it away for re-waxing.

I have waterproof hiking jackets and put them in the washing machine with an in-wash waterproofing product from Nikwax - it works.

Nikwax for me too. DH has some showerproof trousers (cloth not plastic!) and I use it for those. Seems to last quite a long time.

Also check the washing instructions on the garment. DH decided to reproof our jackets and having read the instructions on the reproofing product put them in the machine at 40 degrees, Unfortunately my jacket should have been washed at 30 degrees and the lining disintegrated.
