Help! I've ruined my nearly new chest of drawers! OS solutions?

I didn't realise that my Bio Oil bottle was leaving dark rings on my chest of drawers:-(. There are several stains and they are really near the front edge so when I tried repositioning my basket of toiletries to hide them it looked ridiculous. I've tried everything to clean them off.

It's a cheap laminated light oak coloured chest of drawers next to a matching wardrobe. I don't want to paint both of them. I've looked at buying a piece of frosted glass or perspex but that's not a cheap option. I find clutter very stressful so completely covering the top with loads of baskets doesn't appeal to me!

What would you do to hide the stains?

Would a coaster cover it? You could then stand your bottle on top

Or could you cover the whole top with sticky backed plastic? You can get it on a roll from Wilko's

Could you make a small runner to go along the top/front. This would cover the stains and you
could still put the bottles on it.

The stains are all spread out - I was using the oil in dim light morning and night and just putting the bottle down randomly. Some are so close to the edge that a coaster would look odd.

Is it easy to use the sticky back plastic on a large area? I remember getting into terrible bother with it backing school books as a child!

What sort of runner? I'm not much of a sewer and don't have a sewing machine.

I've nearly finished the wretched Bio Oil and won't be buying more. I was just being frugal using it up but I'm wishing I hadn't bothered!!

Hmm... oil the whole surface? You could prob use cheap veg oil.

I covered my bath panel with it as can't afford new bathroom at the minute and it needed tidying up...i just took my time and peeled it off the backing paper a little bit at a time while smoothing out the air bubbles rather than trying to do it all in one go.

What about a glass chopping board?
I managed to buy one In a charity shop for 50p.
It's a frosted glass one.

I covered the top of a chest of drawers with an old PVC tablecloth once. The top was held on by four cam bolts so easy to undo to lift the top off. I used a staple gun on the underside to hold the tablecloth on and then put it back together. Those PVC cloths dont really fray so you could just cut a piece to the size of the top of your chest if you dont fancy stapling it. I found Dunelm had the best range.

I have an ancient chest of drawers in the hall. It's stripped pine, but the top is very battered. I cover it with a white linen runner, the type with some cut-outs and White embroidery. It wasn't expensive.
