Could someone please help me, 2 player split screen used to work, now it doesnt for some reason?

We have HDMI, and two controlers, but it doesnt recognise the second controler, we swap them round and always number 2 will not work.

Why is it only 1 player recently please?

I wish there was some clear instructions online somewhere?
